The grade level teachers schedule a specific time period for guided reading, writing, spelling, phonics, and skill practice. Grades Kindergarten, First, and Second have an uninterrupted 60 minutes for this work and then shorter periods of time through out the day for skill work and practice in reading and writing.
Students in grades 3, 4, and 5 have an uninterrupted 30 minutes for guided reading. The additional 60 minutes of language arts is scheduled through out the rest of the day.
During guided reading times, not only are the teachers reading with small groups but a classroom aide and an elementary reading specialist is included in the grade level class also working with small groups.
Our intense reading program is designed to be a more personal approach to working with our students so that weakly learned skills are quickly strengthened with specific teacher-attention to re-teaching those skills.
