The faculty and administration of the Jersey Shore Area Middle School expect all students to do their best. We believe students must be active participants in the educational process. The faculty will do everything possible to ensure the success of all students. In preparation for high school, students in the middle school should pass all classes. This will best prepare students to be successful at the Jersey Shore Area High School and beyond. As a guideline for promotion/retention at the Jersey Shore Area Middle School the following expectations will be used:
- If a student fails the same core academic course more than once during his/her years in the middle school (Grades 6-7-8) the student will be retained. For example, if a student fails math in grade 6 and again in grade 7, he/she will not be promoted to the next grade, even if math is the only class the student fails in his/her grade 7 year. If a student fails science in both grade 6 and grade 8, he/she will be retained in grade 8. However, if a student spends two years in the same grade, the first year will not be considered with this guideline.
- If a student fails more than one (1) core adademic class or more than five (5) extended academic classes, the student will be retained. For example, if a student fails math and science, he/she will not be promoted to the next grade, unless he/she passes either math or science in summer school. If a student fails art, physical education, music, computer applications, and technology education, he/she will be retained.
- If a student fails one (1) core academic class and more than three (3) extended academic classes, his/her academic status will be reviewed for possible retention.
