Background
The recycling program at Jersey Shore Area High School is an outreach of the Outdoor Club and our Life Skills Classroom. Student volunteers, faculty and staff who are concerned about the waste output produced by the school have been collecting office paper, cardboard and other recyclables for several years. The Outdoor Club does regular pickups of classroom generated recyclables while students from Mrs. Stephanie Machmer’s class collect the recycling generated during the VIP lunch period and perform additional pickups as needed around the school.
Mission Statement
Our goal is to reduce the amount of solid waste output in our school by collecting materials which are recyclable in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.
Current Efforts – SINGLE STREAM IS HERE!
Beginning in September of 2014, we are going SINGLE STREAM. In conjunction with our partners: Fred Hamm Incorporated and Lycoming County Resource Management,Jersey Shore Area High School and Jersey Shore Area Middle School are piloting Lycoming County’s first SINGLE STREAM recycling program. SINGLE STREAM recycling means that ALL recyclable materials go in the same containers in the schools. This makes recycling even easier. NO MORE SORTING! The materials generated by the HS and MS will be transported by Fred Hamm Incorporated to the Lycoming County Resource Management facility near Montgomery where state of the art machinery will sort and process the recyclable materials for resale. The list of recyclable materials has also grown considerably and now includes: milk cartons, all plastics (#1 – #7), and many paper products.
