 2nd Grade Introduction to Technology

In the Jersey Shore Area School district, computer classes begin in second grade.  The class is designed to use the computer as a tool to enhance research, explore creativity, and are give many opportunities to practice skills.  Students begin learning basic computer parts, how to manipulate the mouse using click and dragging skills, manipulating different programs as the year progresses. Students also get an early start on using the Internet plus Internet safety skills. The importance of Internet safety cannot be stressed enough, which is why it should start early.  This is an introductory course to get students ready for more computer classes throughout their education.

3rd Grade Keyboarding

Keyboarding is a crucial component of using computers as an integrated learning tool.  The goal of teaching keyboarding is to help students become more efficient in using the computer.  It is extremely important to encourage and develop good keyboarding habits right from the start.  Through practice, repetition, and games students will learn the keyboard.  In 3rd and 4th grades accuracy, not speed, is emphasized during instruction.  Good technique is also reinforced.

Students in 3rd and 4th grade receive initial keyboarding instruction along with using a software program called Typing Time that supports the development of good keyboarding technique and adheres to the National Education Technology Standards.  Students and teachers can track student progress on the computer and set individual speed goals.  The following chart shows the lessons included in Typing Time:

4th and 5th Grade Computer Application Classes

These students start out by reviewing the keyboarding skills learned in 3rd grade.  Once students have shown they are proficient in these skills we work on speed and accuracy while using the Practice Makes Perfect section of the Typing Time software program.

Keyboarding and speed are also emphasized by doing activities using programs in Microsoft Office such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
