In Jersey Shore Area School District…
basic music concepts are taught by using a variety of skills-based activities.  Children engage in singing, playing (instruments), moving and listening.
 
Music curriculum K-5
  • general music classes for all students K-5
  • recorder lessons in 3rd grade
  • band lessons and rehearsals in 4th and 5th grades (optional)
  • chorus in 4th and 5th grades (optional)
 
Band and chorus students also participate in district-wide
  • “Artist-in Residence” programs, and have various performance opportunities.
 
The JSASD music curriculum is based on the state and national standards.
Below is an overview of the National Standards for Music Education:
  1. Singing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
  2. Performing on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
  3. Improvising melodies, variations, and accompaniments.
  4. Composing and arranging music within specified guidelines.
  5. Reading and notating music.
  6. Listening to, analyzing, and describing music.
  7. Evaluating music and music performances.
  8. Understanding relationships between music, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts.
  9. Understanding music in relation to history and culture.
