We will be providing an updated description of the configuration of services and classes provided, supported, and co-taught by the reading specialists within the building as the school year and the needs of our student body become more apparent. We are data-driven specialists who collaborate with multiple stakeholders, including parents, learning support teachers, and teachers of all academic subject areas. Much of our former reading department curriculum has been embedded within the skills and materials of multiple courses throughout the middle school. Curriculum resources and specialized instruction will continue to be provided through our Reading Advantage sections, and sessions. Our revised reading department curriculum is still being defined, especially in terms of changes occurring within the format of the state assessments, and shift within our instructional assignments.
As of 2015 – 2016:
6th grade is still heavily co-taught as the students participate in lengthier blocks of instruction and the reading specialist and learning support teachers within the 6th grade wing rotate frequently between classes to help support and meet multiple needs as they arise. The reading teacher also collaborates with the teams of teachers to determine students who could potentially benefit from additional instruction within reading advantage classes which are provided; composed of smaller groupings and based upon specific instructional needs and goals.
7th & 8th grade students participate in both English and reading courses daily in order to prepare for the expectations that will be presented by the PA ELA assessments. The reading teacher also collaborates with the teams of teachers to determine students who could potentially benefit from additional instruction within reading advantage classes which are provided; composed of smaller groupings and based upon specific instructional.
The configuration has shifted over the years. The ‘sharing’ and ‘co-teaching’ has allowed for multiple opportunities, which teachers continue to embrace, for educators and students to make the learning experience for students more cohesive, purposeful and pertinent. We aim to support our students in becoming able to recognize how their skills and knowledge from one content area can support their understanding and skill in another. As they build upon their ability to function with greater independence – we celebrate….JSAMS ROCK!
