Community Letter 3.27.24

March 27, 2024

Hello Jersey Shore Community,

Students have just started the final marking period of the school year.  Please take time to check in on your students grades and progress as we begin the final lap of the school year.

Solar Eclipse
Last week, the district received the following guidance from the Department of Education:

During the April 8, 2024, event, the eclipse impact across PA will range from
Total (100%) to Partial Solar Eclipse (90%). Crawford, Erie, Mercer, and Warren
counties are in direct line for the path of totality or 100% magnitude.
The
remainder of the state will be in the 99% to 88.65% magnitude, thus viewing
precautions and the use of protective eyewear during the entire eclipse
including the peak are required to prevent permanent eye damage.
**NEVER LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE SUN WITHOUT PROTECTIVE EYEWEAR**

At this point, the district has no intention of adjusting the school day on April 8, 2024. As an educational institution, we have made plans to treat this rare phenomenon as an learning opportunity. Science teachers have plans to conduct lessons on the eclipse and explain it to students.  The district has purchased glasses and made plans to accommodate taking students outside to view it from some classes.

As discussed in the last community letter, please remember that the district will be closed for students on Thursday, March 28th; Friday, March 29th; Monday, April 1st and Tuesday, April 2nd.  There are no other planned closure days in the month of April.

The Board of Directors has approved the 2024-2025 school calendar.  It can be found on the district website.

Please note that PSSA exams start later in the month of April and think now about making plans to support your child.

All the best,

Dr. Ulmer
