Hello Jersey Shore Community,
As I write this letter, the sun is shining and the warmth of the week is signaling the end of the school year! PSSA exams are under way in grades 3-8 and Keystone exams are coming soon.
Spongy (Gypsy) Moths
Yesterday afternoon, I sent a message to Administrators and nurses regarding the prevalence of these. We are seeing an increase in visits to the nurses offices with students who are breaking out after coming into contact with the moths outside. We have alerted staff when taking students out so that if there are a number of moths around and they are landing on students, we end the outside activity to limit exposure. This is an invasive species and DCNR has notified the District of spraying in our area. If you come into contact with the moths, and have a serious reaction, please consult with a healthcare provider. Here are basic care instructions from the Cleveland Clinic:
- Wash the skin thoroughly with soap and water.
- Apply an ice pack to reduce swelling and pain
- Create a paste using baking soda and water and slather it on the affected skin to reduce itching. A hydrocortisone cream also may be used.
- Take an oral antihistamine (such as Benadryl®) if the reaction to the sting worsens
21st Century Program
This is the final year for the after school and summer elementary program funded by the 21st Century grant. When the program ends at the end of this school year, the funding will also end. There has been a reduction in funding to this program across the state – not just in Jersey Shore. We will investigate applying for another 21st CCLC grant if the opportunity becomes available for our district.
Remember that the district will be closed Friday, May 24th and Monday, May 27th for the Holiday weekend. The last day for students is May 30th and it will be a 2-hour early dismissal.
All the best,
Dr. Ulmer
